Yes, a lot of times NW does not like to give it's "premium" coach seats to friends of MVP's. 
I think it’s great when other airlines recognize Elite levels but can understand when they will not recognize friends and co-works non-status. It’s like my great grandfather used to say, “Don’t put you feet under the table if your not bringing anything to it.” Unfortunately PAX with no status are a dime a dozen unless you are on Southwest. ^
One thing about NW though, if you dont like the original answer call back and talk to another CSR.
