Your star alliance status is not relevant. If you wish to upgrade an eligible UA flight through the star alliance upgrade process you would request via NZ

and just in case i misunderstood, if you're trying to upgrade a united ticketed flight on a unitec operated flight, you wouldn't use *A Upgrade.
if you wanted to use Airpoints to do a *A upgrade, then you would need to book with NZ
Your last sentence is not clear (need to book the flight on UA and the upgrade on NZ)
