A 12-year old isn't perhaps as big a deal as a 3-year old, but many people still want to avoid having their kids across the aisle or in the row behind them... However, usually when that happens due to full flights, the people sitting next to the minor are also pretty happy to move...

Unlike the notorious LCCs, however, IB doesn't split families up just for fun (and to make them pay)
