I had to explain to the TA that this was a request for a EXST (extra seat for passenger comfort) SSR (special service request). That seemed to have done the trick. They have informed me that they can update the booking to include an extra seat this way. Now I'm working with them to see what it'll cost and if it imposes any additional restrictions/conditions. Once I know more I'll update the post here.
