Of course there is paradoxically a cost too of going to the hotel (eg my bag can get stolen there too, i could oversleep and miss my flight etc), so it doesn't follow that any option is by default better or 'cheaper'. Depends on the value that we as individuals attach to risk, comfort, stress, health and other intangible costs and our willingness to pay to avoid such.
I guess that OP has heard enough EWR horror overnight-sleeping stories so that OP no longer wants to overnight at EWR (at DEN probably, instead, after SDC of EWR-SFO flight; https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/unit...up-ua-app.html). OP now has trouble with boarding pass of one of the flights. It seems that OP does not want to lose (<400) BIS miles to fly AUA-ORD-SFO, instead, which I would do if I were in OP's shoes.
Happy travels.
