Personal item size for Eva Air

Hi all! We have a flight from Seattle to Hanoi on Sunday night. We never check bags and usually just travel with backpacks and a carry-on luggage.

Adhering to the 7kg limit on the carry on weight has been a challenge, but I was able to organize everything with packing cubes and put the heavier items on my backpack. (Shoes, toiletries, curling iron, make up, etc. ) Our backpacks are Osprey 40L and they're always fine as a personal item in the USA. I have flown Ryan Air on several occasions and it usually passes. There was just ONE time when the gate agent decided to pull me aside and charge me $100 USD for "oversize", but she let my daughter and husband go through with the same backpacks. In the end, I'm willing to pay extra if necessary, as long as I get to keep my luggage. (Bad experiences with checking baggage so I avoid it. )

Going by the measurements, our backpacks are definitely too big for the Eva air personal item allowance. Will this be an issue? I heard agents are strict weighing suitcases, but usually don't bother with backpacks. Should I try to go buy smaller backpacks before our trip or should I take the risk and hope the agents are in a good mood? 🙈😅
