^ Not United-specific, but South African Airlines checked letter at check-in when I was on a family trip with nieces with only their mom traveling with them. SA is notoriously stringent at immigration, so SAA was certainly covering themselves.

But never has my wife or me had an issue traveling internationally with our child to Europe without the other.
