It really bothers me when hotels pull stuff like this and devalue their brand, devalue brand loyalty, and devalue elite benefits. All to pad their bottom line as opposed to offering a better guest experience.
Breakfast is an important component of the stay for us. Paying out of pocket over $200 for breakfast while burning around 50k points per day is lame.
I'm sure the hotel is more than happy to accept the cancelation so they call sell the room for cash instead of points.

Make sure you tell hotel management and Marriott that you cancelled due to the hotel refusing to honour the terms of their membership agreement.
That's how you get hotel management to follow the rules they've agreed to.
If their response is they don't need the business from Marriott Elite members, that's good information to have.
