A bigger pay cheque means more tax is paid. Considering the "progressive" tax rate Canada has, earning more isn't always worth it. My own experience was negative. I didn't keep much of a pay/bonus increase. As others have pointed out, more time off would be of greater value. A combination of both should provide a sweet spot.
Often, flying, I stumble onto people who make enough money to fly but who don't understand concepts like "assigned seats". It's rare and unique that I find someone who makes enough money to regularly fly across the Pacific who doesn't understand that the higher tax rates applies only to some of the earnings; making more will always lead to making more.
