And assuming the Android JAL app indeed shows my boarding pass, will I still have to go to the JAL ticket counter at the departing airport in order to show that boarding pass and my passport and any other ID?

I'm sorry for these seemingly very basic questions, but in the past I had check-in problems with a different airline when using their own Android app, and I want to make sure that I'm doing everything correctly for JAL app-assisted check-in, and that everything will work properly.

Thank you again for your help and your patience.
You can get your boarding pass in the app, and that will negate the need to visit the check-in counter if you don't have luggage to check-in. At security they will want to verify your boarding pass and passport, and same again at the gate. But other than that, there are no formalities.

There might be some destinations where they don't want to issue the boarding pass until your travel documents have been verified, in which case you'll get an "online check-in not available" kind of message.
