For most awards the miles go back almost instantaneously, but for some you have to call and have an agent manually process the redeposit.

If you cancel online, pay attention to the screen that pops up right after you cancel. If the miles are going to refunded automatically you'll see a text box that says something along the lines of "We've reinstated your miles....".

For other cancelled awards that are not automatically redeposited, you'll see a different text box with something like "We've emailed you the ticket number, which you'll need when you call to rebook or have your miles refunded...".

And all taxes and fees are fully refunded for a cancelled award.
