I am getting the notion I am missing something here.

Is this First Upgrade simply a full fare coach - but if you are Gold or above you get an instant upgrade to F?

And if this is true and no upgrades are offered that flight, why is AS offering the fare?

Note: I tried a test booking with Gold upgrade; no F seats offered.
