The problem though with the current system of using SWUs on other airlines (and presumably miles too) is that the ticket has to be issued by AA "or" at least one AA coded segment has to be on the itinerary. I made that mistake last year on a BA ticketed and entirely BA coded itinerary with domestic AA segments, so couldn't upgrade from BA C to F with an AA SWU, that was a bummer.
This is a Oneworld upgrade system. Other OW airlines do not have SWU's or some thing like them. SWU on other airlines will be an
airline to airline out of alliance agreement. The upgrade method on OW airlines for their own freq flyers vary a lot. To many AA flyers seem to think other airlines operate the same way as AA for upgrades.
