Yes. The baggage computer uses 12 hours or overnight, and does not pay attention to the faring of the ticket or how you booked it. Actually not sure if it would join something like SFO-EWR-LAX, but it probably would.

You might have a reasonable shot getting a human to short-check, I don't know these days.
