I was operating under the assumption that he wasn't going to advertise the nested trip to the border control person, but you've triggered (in my mind) the possibility that he might be given a 144 hour stamp instead of the 24 hour stamp unless he explains that he is planning on leaving his zone before his onward flight. This shouldn't be too difficult.
