Yep, you're right. Unless you are MGM Gold or above you can't link accounts. Took a bit of digging to figure it out exactly.
The only confusing thing I'll see is a bonvoy elite using the bonvoy check in line when they booked through mgm, not a qualifying stay. If I didn't spend a little time looking into this, I certainly would have thought I have access to that line even though my booking is through MGM.
