Why are rt fares ex-Japan 4-8K cheaper than ex-East Coast?

I found some IN space a couple months out and booked a OW to Japan and am thinking about buying one of these cheaper ex-Japan rts, and putting the return 10-12 months out in the hopes of picking-up the orphan segment (yes, I know the OW biz fares are only 3-4K).
