If you take the Narita Express you'll have to go to the manned ticket sales counter, since the Narita Express is an all reserved train. The sales clerks speak english. Make sure its the "JR" counter, since there is another railroad company (Keisei Railways) that serves the airport as well.
The automatic ticket machines are for taking other trains to Tokyo proper.
