Like others mentioned, KLM is known for consistency and general efficiency. Not luxury or bling bling, because that's not Dutch. And not too long ago, it was KLM's profits that were compensating for AF's unprofitability within AF/KLM Groupe. And while the salons at AMS leave something to be desired, the relative efficiency of the smaller hub is easier to navigate for non-experienced travellers than the sprawling behemoth that is CDG.
Like almost all airlines, it's a race to the bottom. It's just how they manage to déguise enhance it to various degrees in different classes. I recommend paying cash for a PE ticket on AF next time to see what I mean.
