Dropping back on this thread like an old friend, one of 2 things happened to me. I concluded they had upgraded the Home Office link which I think was discussed on the thread at about the same time. So, choose which one it was that ended my nightmare.
Anyway, to your question, it can't hurt. I am interested to see this thread is still VERY active so people need help.
While I suspect my passport chip has just gone, it's worthwhile trying the e-Gates as even though it may well be a waste of time, the queue for the passport person at the e-gates section is way way shorter than just using the other lane (at least at Heathrow T5 anyway). And if the gates do start suddenly working again - happy days!
