In the mid-late nineties UA was flylng double daily, one SFO-NRT and one XXX-NRT-SFO. The merger with CO brought in new thinking who, among other things, thought supporting freight was not important and dropped back to once daily. You could view double daily as a resumption of UA's historical level.

The amount of travel between Taiwan and the US is substantial. The more surprising element to me has been the lack of interest from DL and AA until very recently. Both AA and DL from its purchase of NW have served TPE for varying lengths of time but not recently.
