With such a high priced ticket wonder what the t&c's were. Their travel insurance, if any, should have covered with many policies.
The media coverage of this story just poses more questions than answers.

Aren't scenarios like this precisely why people buy travel insurance.. Yes many airlines may offer compassionate changes but it's not something anybody probably offers in their T&C due to something like this no doubt being a pretty common occurance.. And at the end of the day why should they simply opt to cover something like this for free? Is it really any different to (say) being told a close family member is gravely ill?
