How critical is it you make that SYD flight? There's certainly a scenario where you have no chance of making the SFO connection. With the runway closure, SFO is particularly messy right now.

I flew UA SFO-RNO Monday afternoon. A bumpy flight due to winds. As we were landing at the Reno airport, the captain suddenly increased power, and ascended again. He circled and made a second attempt at landing, which was successful. This was a first for me. 😊
I have vivid memories of that RNO approach during high winds. Combine the steep descent from the west, and it can be quite the experience.
