Isn't this the point: some drivers won't take the fare if they can't contact you by phone, and they're not going to call an overseas number.
I'm almost certain calls are routed (anonymously) via a central switchboard. In any event, I know many people who have used Didi with non-China phone numbers and the drivers haven't seemed shy about calling.
