It should eventually work assuming you had same iCloud account for old and new phone. I had similar issue while replacing iPhone SE in 2017 - at that time one needed to remove the mobile IC card before erasing phone - the Apple genius bar person did not understand this and I lost my mobile Suica and balance. Finally got it back - this year.
