There's no reason not to register as a resident now and re-do it as TTP after your visa is up. The resident version costs nothing and doesn't require applying in advance. On your next flight out, just go to the little window next to the diplomat/APEC lane and ask to sign up. Budget an extra half hour or so for paperwork.
