I know it is late to need and after the fact, but still want to give a shout out for the Mai Khao Renaissance where I have been staying for many years and just checked in this afternoon. The pool villas are my favorite, but the rooms are also very nice.

It tends to get a nice mix of visitors from all over the world who behave well, never experienced the "over run" scenario mentioned up thread. The layout of the property is easy on the eye with an infinity pool next to the beach, casual bar/dining next to the pool with a novel sand floor, and winding garden pathways to get to and from the various areas. Excursions are readily available although going south to Phuket City, beaches or sights down there takes some time. It is also not that far from the airport, so there is that. The food is exceptional at this resort. Fantastic breakfast buffet every day and their Thai restaurant Takeing is one of my favorites.
