there is no requirement to enter your passport details online, checkin at the airport can collect all the data.

Similarly, for a domestic flight there is no passport requirement.

for those reasons i doubt the 'match' is done based on a passport number as it cannot be relied on. If i was coding it then i may use it if its there but uf its not then other options need to be looked at.

I suspect if there are multiple people with the same name then you get shown a list and the check in agent needs to pick one.
