Surely one of our BA insiders can clarify. I always thought the passport swipe at check in was to pull up your booking in the system. Swiping the passport would avoid the problems the OP had and those that some of the rest of us have encountered.

I guess I am confused as to why the check in agent wouldn't swipe the passport to pull the booking info up especially for US bound flights with the checks the DHOS require.
