Sounds like a misaligned or failing SIM card, IMO. Take it out, gently wipe the contacts with something like a handkerchief, and reinsert it. If that fails to fix the problem, I would contact your provider's customer service about putting in a new SIM. Had a T-Mobile (my backup phone) SIM fail after about 4 years, and a new SIM from them instantly solved the problem.
Thanks for the suggestion. Was still having issues after removing and reinserting SIM.
Reluctantly, "re-activated" my Fi service, worked for a while and then the same. After a second try, it's been holding so far, and going on about 24 hrs almost.
