No. Discoverist only gets preferred room within same room type. Your City View was a higher room type (and you lucked into one of the best non-suites in the entire property - the 57th St. facing rooms are a seriously inferior experience).
It's so typical of this property to demand an upgrade fee to keep the same room.
I disagree that the 57th street stacks are "seriously inferior", and in fact, some of my favorite rooms are lower floors facing Carnegie Hall and the bustle of the city. I prefer that to staring at the back of the Essex House any day.
