I did this just a few days ago, uncertain whether it would really work. Within a day or so after my booking I got a notice that I would receive the $200 credit but that it might take a while to post to my AmEx account. Note that you have to prepay the reservation. The hotel booking I made was paid in advance but still refundable if I had needed to cancel it.
