If you are trying to do it online, you have to go through the check-in option on flight to get to option to do a same-day change (you still have to go through check-in screen even if you are already checked in). If you just go through Change Flights option for itin, it will try to charge you the fare difference. Also, the algorithm for online SDC is messed up and it won't let you SDC to a later flight until you are within 24 hours of the flight you want to SDC onto.
