Taking food from strangers, the power of a 1K

This morning was my first flight as a 1k.

I was seated in 5H, #30 out of 34 passengers when it came to placing breakfast orders. Choice of nothing. The only item remaining was the spinach and cheese omelette with hollandaise sauce. I asked the purser if they were serving the usual breakfast sandwich in the back. I would prefer that to the omelette.

He told me that he would take a fruit plate away from someone with lesser or no elite status, if I wanted a fruit plate. I declined.

He said that they are now doing that as a matter of policy. The higher volume flyer gets their preferred food selection. Some other 1k on the flight had already opted to do this. Then why not take the orders by status, like they used to? It would seem to me to make more sense.
