I have been told at City many times that my name matches someone on their screen who they can see and who clearly is not me. So they and my wife have imagined that?
No, not at all but you may have misunderstood what the officer was saying when they say they can ‘see’
a match. The match would be a name/age match rather than a photo. That’s what I was referring to - your wife would not have seen someone else’s photo on the screen as it’s not possible other than your passport photo(s) and the photo from the eGate.
But I agree that’s probably why you can’t get through the eGates. It’s explained above why this happens in the U.K. and not elsewhere in the world.
I hope that makes sense.
