Free, yes. But it's dependent upon how many are on your reservation. With one companion you also get access to Premium class. We've learned that when we book the entire family (i.e., two or more companions) we still get free seat selection, but only the Elite Preferred seats. This applies even if there are multiple elite fliers on the same PNR.
