Well it depends on the case but if full , AF might invite you to check your luggage for free , and at gate if your luggage seems too big to fit under yor seat the agent might take a look

Just in case be ready for it get a carry on smaller than airline max dimensions and ensure total weight is under 10kgs

Also in case you are forced to check it then have the necessary item in a separate bag inside the big one

well , no idea where you get this but its not as bad as you think , MUC or AMS did worse recently
