We liked the arts in the area, plus some of the restaurants. The St. Regis appears to be at golf course (IIRC) - generally we like "city hotels" when we're in a city. We also want to go to one of the island off Mumbai. Had a look yesterday, and if you want to be at the peninsula, those are the only real options. And then leaning towards the Taj simply because of the pool area.

Actually the St.Regis is not on a golf-course. It is very much a 'city hotel' as it's part of the Palladium Mall which is Mumbai's fanciest mall. So you can check it out if you are looking for something different. It also has a rooftop pool.
If you like arts, then I would suggest you check-out the brand new Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC). I have heard very good reviews (not been personally but will visit later this year).
Which island you want to visit from Mumbai? Are you referring to Alibaug? If so then Taj and Oberoi will be the most convenient yes...and I've never had negative feedback from any of my clients who have stayed there.
