It’s pretty much a given that check-in staff will tell you what they are told to tell you and what suits the airline, irrespective of your actual eligibility. It’s not terribly unusual for staff to “forget” to tell you about access altogether.

The problem really comes when lounge entry staff are (also) making up their own rules.
