No it wont earn miles and its not a mistake ; they have mecanism for that no worry about it , cause in this case the operating airline would need to pay the airline's owning the FFP to give the miles (dont remember which one , maybe its the other way around), which doesnt happen on awards tickets cause you dont "pay" with cash , except for taxes and "fees"

Its not the case but lets just imagine for this example that he could get miles on a award ticket

Unless your son is already silver with A3 and already has 4 A3 segments behind himself , he would never get gold with this trip only

So to get gold quickly , his grandpa will spend lot of money and your son would be travelling around the world non stop for a week

Assuming he starts from scratch , without these 2+4 segments your son would first need to collect an amount of miles 1,5 times the earth's circumference on a single trip (35k)

That amount could probably be reached (or if not getting nearby) by flying F/P with SQ between europe and america through SIN back and forth

Then due to the fact that once you earn a status in A3 whatever excess status miles you have will be lost , he will need another trip where he would need to collect 3 times the earth's circumference , (70k) so thats probably the same SQ trip twice
