Yes I have his ticket now, he is home. His boarding pass looks totally fine to me, it was the receipt that had the "not valid for travel" but his boarding pass seems fine (but did not work).

Did they give him more than one document at check in? Did the boarding pass have a ticket number (not a stock control number… both start with 001)? Did it say anything like Flight Coupon Req?
You are correct he sent me a picture of his receipt, but he had a boarding pass separate. I have both in my hands now.

He said the ticket agent at the gate told him his ticket "expired". So I guess it is somehow possible that he had a ticket but it expired? I have never heard of such a thing and especially where purchased at the ticket counter I cannot see how that could have happened. It is very strange but now I have to do it again so don't want to waste another set of Uber fees to get him to airport and back just to have him get denied again. Wish AA had been more helpful at the airport.
