However, if you're set on the PVG routing, I suppose the Disney hotels might be worth a look. Although they aren't spectacular, they are a big step up from the airport properties, and there are decent dining options in the area.
Correction: The Shanghai Disneyland Hotel is absolutely spectacular, 5 stars, both indoors and out (wonderful grounds). Can book dinner on the top floor restaurant and watch the fireworks at night. But the hotel is priced to match.
Given the price, if OP isn't a disney fan, maybe she would find better value in a hotel in the city.
Also, China is very safe. No need to worry about safety.
