It's not that uncommon. In Quebec for example both spouses keep their last names.
And keeping one's real name is also an option in other places. In some countries changing is not legally an option, even if socially it is.
This name changing thing is a laftover from times when wives were (and places where wives are) the property of the husband. And when marrying was a woman's crowning achievement.
My wife, daughter and daughter in law all continue using their maiden's name, thank god.
