I have a fully flexible BA e-ticket (booked via ba.com) that I may be refunding. Would it be faster to simply go to the BA ticketing desk at ORD or DTW, or will they tell me to send a fax away to New York?

Four weeks to five months seems like an excessive wait (particularly the five months!).
