Also in case you're not aware, BA doesn't offer standby options like AA does, but it does offer same-day change on Plus fares on simple itineraries. That's worth considering if you think you might want to catch an earlier/later flight.
And for the avoidance of doubt, "simple" means A-B, or A-B-A.
If the booking includes any connections, or is open jaw (at either end, including to/from different London airports) then it ceases to be eligible for free same-day changes.
That being said, Plus is usually priced only £10-20 more than the HBO fare. So if you're on a route with multiple daily flights and you want to take one that's expensive, you can book a Plus fare for a cheaper flight that day and then do a SDC at midnight on the day of departure.
Of course that comes with the risk that your desired flight will be sold out, so you should only book a Plus fare for a flight you'd actually be willing to take if push came to shove.
