well airlines usually never pay your expenses when you don't approach them and ask them for a solution like rebooking you in the first place. when they rebook you on another carrier the costs for them are a fraction of what you pay as and end customer when buying a last minute ticket in probably one of the highest fare buckets.
I have ALWAYS had good service with the platinum line - they rebooked me on other carriers all the ime - no issues.
yes, it is frustrating when flights are cancelled upon short notice, but the platinum line has never let me down in unfortunate situations.
