Don't get me wrong - QR service is still way better in general to what you get with AF, LH, KL or any other major EU airlines, but it's just the value of money and other factors which QR is selling that makes it more difficult to justify the reason to fly with them just because they are QR.
It really depends based on what each of us are looking for, for me it is the value of what I get for my money -- if any EU airline offers something close to what QR is asking for, I'll pick the EU airline over QR despite the not as refined service as QR, but in this case I can maximize my sleep/rest instead of transiting in the Middle East.
If I have time and want to spend a day in Qatar to adjust to the time, and the price is right, for me QR is fine.
I mean why would I want to pay for example 1600+ Euro with QR when at times I can get the same price (or even cheaper) with AF/KL or BA or LH/LX if I made a short detour to start from another city to the same destination in Asia with a guarantee of undisturbed rest due to the transit in the middle east? Previously I was ok as you could get 1100-1300 Euro to Asia and EU airlines where pricing themselves >1600 Euro in general. Now I believe the tables have turned.
Even in Y, unless the difference is big I would still still not consider any of these Mid-east airline when I can get in a shorter time to my destination.
I believe QR has gone ahead of itself and with it's good marketing as being the best business class and with all Social Media influencers saying it is, the general public feels it is and therefore giving them the power to price itself to what it is today (the same for TK - which totally has zero Customer Service when things go wrong) - basically just being arrogant.
I am just curious going into the next 5 years with the new CEO who at least is not as vocal and "sensational" as Al-Baker from what I noticed, what will happen to QR? Same direction as EY?
Cheers!
