I lol'd when you said one open shade can affect the entire cabin - that is next level gaslighting. In reality, there is never one window open, but many for daytime flights. As per my other earlier note, some airlines have strict requirement of shades being open during takeoff and landings. Naturally after take off, many windows will remain open, especially on the side without the sun.

If you want shades closed and be in a totally dark cabin for the entire cabin, get a window seat, so you can control (assuming US airlines with no strict policies of open shades for takeoffs/landings). At the same time, someone on the opposite side of you have the same control as you, and can decide to open as a window seater. Again, be considerate, but otherwise, the freedom to open and close shades generally lie with the pax.

Re: lav - if you use it a lot, then get an aisle seat, so you don't have to constantly trouble your seatmates. Again, common courtesy, pretty straight forward stuff.
It's not only about the sleep. You can't see damn thing on your IFE screen or your ipad to watch everything because one entitled brat wants to shoot the light beam across the cabin.
