My understanding is that
sometimes two tickets in one reservation can get baggage checked through. An interline agreement would be necessary, but I'm not sure it's sufficient. AMEX might be such an agent, or an honest-to-god brick and mortar travel agent. I've never had to do such a thing though, so am no expert. I'm not sure that's going to be a better solution than buying an actual open-jaw though.
