Yes, it's very much a QR thing, it's to do with their gate checks and gate processes, they really want you to have their piece of paper in your hand. I remember once at OSL when the gate printer broke - they were sending people running down to the security through Schengen to collect boarding passes printed from landside. BA does something similar at ORD due to all the transit passengers there.
